1. How do you greet people (in detail – what exactly do you say)? How do you sign off or say goodbye (again, in detail)? How do you deal with uncomfortable moments (silence, for example)? Do you use humour to transition to a close? Record your response on your blog (in writing).
Generally when I first start talking to new people I can appear as shy and somewhat nervous, even though it is only because I am cautious and observing so I know the appropriate way to respond. There are many factors which effect how to communicate with others, some of these factors include: Who it is that you are speaking to, what it is that they say, in what channel/mode it is being communicated and more (Eunson 2012). How I greet people depends on the mode in which I am conversing, via email I always start off with dear (including the person’s name), on the phone I say hi, in person I say hey. Again how I say goodbye also depends on the mode on which I am conversing. I say ttyl (talk to you later) when messaging on fb, line, skype etc. I say bye on the phone and see you later in person. I deal with uncomfortable moments usually in different ways depending on the mode again. Such as when in person I often try to politely smile and reply in a manner which is polite but displays that I am uncomfortable, if it is in message usually I’ll be silent for a long time before replying in the shortest way I can think, on the phone I often convey with certain words and sounds like ugh or um.

Tom Hiddleston interview
(a) How was the interviewee introduced?
The interviewee was Tom Hiddleston was introduced by saying “Tom Hiddleston has called the role of Hank Williams one of the hardest jobs he’s ever done.”
(b) What types of questions were asked?
The questions that were asked were ones mainly about his film and did not include close ended questions. This is because it is an entertainment interview.
(c) How was the potential for conflict managed (if any)?
There was no potential for conflict in this particular interview.
(d) Was humour evident, and how?
I could not find any humour to be evident in this interview as it was mainly to do with the role that Tom Hiddleston was playing in a new movie called “I Saw the Light Star” where the actor plays the character by the name of Hank Williams.
(e) How did the interview conclude?
The interview concluded by stating that the movie ‘I Saw the Light Star’ is now in limited release.
Bernie Sanders interview
(a) How was the interviewee introduced?
The interviewee was introduced by saying that “The Daily News Editorial Board interviewed Sen. Bernie Sanders, Democratic candidate for President, on April 1 in the offices of the newspaper in downtown Manhattan.”
(b) What types of questions were asked?
The type of questions that were asked in this interview were about the campaign, ones which were to gain insight.
(c) How was the potential for conflict managed (if any)?
Well when it comes to politics there is often potential for conflict, to manage this the questions would have to be worded in a way which would not seem offensive.
(d) Was humour evident, and how?
There was no humour that I could find evident in this interview.
(e) How did the interview conclude?
The interview concludes on a more personal note near the end and then goes back to the interviewee answering a question then both the interviewer and the interviewee are thanking each other.
(f) What were the differences, if any, between the types of interview?
The news values of proximity and prominence were used in the Giroux (2016) interview and the NYDailyNews.com (2016) interview. According to Whitaker, Ramsey & Smith (2012) Proximity is the interest in what is going on around them, what is closest to them. Prominence is news stories about famous people or well-known people which generally creates a lot of interest amongst the public (Whitaker, Ramsey & Smith 2012).
There were some differences between the Giroux (2016) interview and the NYDailyNews.com (2016) interview. The Giroux (2016) interview was just a really basic interview on the actor playing the role of a character in the movie. Bainbridge, Goc & Tynan (2011, p. 204) states that audiences can develop parasocial relationships with people they have only known through the media, in similar ways to real friends and colleagues. According to Bainbridge, Goc & Tynan (2011, p. 204) this is especially applicable to celebrities who might be seen over and over again, in this case the celebrity would be Tom Hiddleston. Whereas, the NYDailyNews.com (2016) interview is a really in depth interview about the particular issues so the reader could get a sense of how Bernie Sanders presidency might evolve.

Key points that are mentioned in the Heritage & Clayman (2010) article are ways to increase the effectiveness of speech. Some of these ways to increase effectiveness are: the use of antithesis, Puzzle solutions, structuring the speech rhetorically with levels of intonation, rhythm, timing and gesture. Adding contrast and lists so that the speech will be more memorable and repeatable. The article states that it is both form and content that matter when it comes to making speeches effective. Heritage & Clayman (2010) states that form enhances the chance of applaud from the audience. According to Atkinson (1984b, cited in Heritage & Clayman 2010, p.277) sound bites and quotations survive beyond today news because they are an element of contrast, ideally in combination with a list, which is effectively essential for long-term survival.
