COMM1107 Media Writing Blog Activities Week 4 Practical: Plan your Stories and Prepare for Ass 3

Identify two possible events that you could cover for Assignment 3.

The two events I can cover for assignment 3 are the Bundy Flavours Festival as well as the Moore Park Beach Festival Art Competition and Bazaar.

Finding two events in Bundaberg that interested me was a challenge as there is not very much on in Bundaberg that is for adults that do not include alcohol and is affordable for me.

I have been reading the chapters seven, nine and 16 of Whitaker, Ramsey & Smith (2012) that discusses interviewing people. I have also read chapter seven of (Hicks 2013). I will try to remember to incorporate some of the information regarding how to be a good interviewer.

Moore Park Beach Festival Art Competition and Bazaar

Moore Park Beach Festival Art Competition and Bazaar is an annual event held on the eighth, ninth and tenth of August, it has been running since 1999. I have contacted the organiser at this address deann.angel@hotmail.com where I have asked her a number of questions regarding certain aspects of the festival such as whether I have to get accredited for the event. Deann replied that there was no accreditation needed but offered friendly advice to ask for permission to take pictures of any kids.

The eighth of august is the major day for events with the most to offer on the day. There is a large list of entertainment; a number of examples can include:

  • laser skirmish
  • face painting
  • giant kites
  • archery display
  • Tai Kwan Do and more.

This is a great family festival with a number of local schools, clubs and businesses participating in the event. I will try to get a short quote and photo from the organiser Deann Angel, a family, a friend and one of the stall workers.

Bundy Flavours Festival is an annual event held on the 14th of September at Alexandra Park, this event has been running for three years. The event includes

  • produce markets
  • demonstrations & displays
  • there is also music and activities for children.

This is another festival that is great for a family day out, people who like food and who like to garden.

I have contacted the organiser which is the Bundaberg council at this address events.admin@bundaberg.qld.gov.au and I have asked if I need to get accredited for this event, I am still waiting for a response. I will also try with this event to get a short quote and photo from the organiser, a family, a friend and one of the stall workers.

f. Watch the ‘Why you should plan’ short video on the course website. On your blog, list the three main points from Kate as to why planning is important.

I was unable to look at the video provided in Moodle until week 6. The three main points covered in Kate Ames video are basically:

  • are there any main events
  • check if you need to get accreditation
  • Time flies, so plan and be adaptable.

COMM11007 Media Writing Week 4 – Grammar: Problems and Confusions Reflection

Reflect on this briefly on your blog – Did you find the questions difficult? Did you have any problems in specific areas?

My result on the quiz was very pleasing this week. I had no problems understanding the content about common grammar problems and confusions in chapter 4 of Hicks (2013) .

When I did the quiz this week I flew through it without having to reread any questions. When I submitted my answers for the quiz my result was 100% because of this I did not have to reattempt it this week.

Overall, over the weeks I am very happy with the results I have been getting with the quizzes. I hope this type of result continues throughout the term.

COMM11007 Media Writing Blog Activites Week 4 Inquiry: Review the following two pieces and respond to the questions on your blog.

What do you think could be the main issues with this poorly written entertainment news story?: Robert Pattinson talks about his new film, The Rover, with Dave O’Neil.

‘Robert Pattinson talks about his new film, The Rover, with Dave O’Neil’

Figure 1: Robert Pattinson talks about his new film The Rover with Dave O’Neil Source: O’Neil 2014
Figure 1: Robert Pattinson talks about his new film The Rover with Dave O’Neil
Source: O’Neil 2014

The very first thing that sticks out with the O’Neil (2014) article is that everything looks chunky and not something that appeals to the eyes. The story is over crowded with trivial information and the reporter tells the event in a fictional way (O’Neil 2014). According to Whitaker, Ramsey & Smith (2012) news stories should be broken up into small paragraphs which this article has clearly not done.

I cannot tell if we are supposed to believe that Robert Pattinson was actually talking to him. Or if we are to assume by the way the story and the lead is written that the bodyguard stopped the interaction between the reporter and the actor (O’Neil 2014).

According to Whitaker, Ramsey & Smith (2012, p.87) ‘the most important thing of all, at least for writers today, is to strip language clean, to lay it bare down to the bone’. Which has clearly not been done in this article.

His personal comments during the article about Twilight and the joke about the bodyguard mistaking him for a werewolf  O’Neil (2014), could actually be considered offensive to some audiences; especially Twilight fans who might have read it.

Another problem found with this article is the information provided has nothing to do with the title which is about Robert Pattinson’s new movie (O’Neil 2014).

My personal feelings about the article is that the title should be changed from ‘Robert Pattinson talks about his new film, The Rover, with Dave O’Neil’ to ‘my experience at the party with Robert Pattinson in it.’

One good aspect is that if the audience is looking for a story that is simply entertaining and not in any way revealing about the new movie then I would suggest it. Reading the story does provide a few laughs as the reporter had used a comedic tone throughout most of it.

What do you think is good about this well-written media release?: ‘Drought worst in living memory’

Figure 2: Agforce Source: Agforce 2015

The very first thing that sticks out with the Agforce (2015) article is that it looks neat, short and pleasing to the eye. However, the subject was not one of personal interest to me which made it rather hard to read all of it.

In the Agforce (2015) article another reason on why it was hard to read might be that there was a lot of statistical data all clumped together. It could have been given more spacing between dot points to make it easier to read, or the statistical data could been separated and made more simplistic (Whitaker, Ramsey & Smith 2012).

One last thing that was a problem for me is that because I do not know much about farming or about most of the financial details it made it harder for me to understand what the article was talking about (Agforce 2015). This would limit the readers as it is not produced in a way that anyone could simply read it and understand it (Whitaker, Ramsey & Smith 2012).

One good aspect about the story is that the beginning and the ending of the article is fairly easy to read and understand. Another good aspect is that the article is rather factual, impersonal and provides in depth detail about the issue it is covering.
